Valentine's Day Facts

8:36 AM

Hello people, how are you today?
I would first like to congratulate all of you Valentine's Day and wish you lots of love and happiness.
Since I opened the blog recently I decided to make my first post dedicated to this special day.
I prepared for you some interesting facts about this holliday of love, so lets start ...

1. Valentine's Day started with Romans.
One of the theory is that while the Roman Emperor Claudius II was trying to bolster his army, he forbade young men to get married because he thought single men make better soldiers. In the spirit of love, St. Valentine defied the ban and performed secret marriages. For his disobedience, Valentine was executed on February 14.

2. Valentines's Day is second most popular holliday for greeting cards
Just after Christmas Valentine's Day is the second most popular greeting card giving occasion according to the Greeting Card Association, 190 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually.

3. Caramel-flavored chocolates are the most popular in a Valentine’s Day chocolate box.
Is Valentine’s Day a celebration of chocolate? Either way, a box of chocolates—likely in the shape of a heart—is one of the most popular gifts on February 14. In the US, every year, chocolate sales reach or exceed $20 billion!

4.Roses are the flower of Love

A beautiful bouquet of roses might be the best gift for your Valentine but do you know why they are associated with this day? The red rose is believed to be the flower Venus, the Roman Goddess of Love, really liked and therefore it became a symbol of love.
Also , The number of roses you give on Valentine’s Day also has meaning. One rose is good for a whirlwind romance. Giving two means you’re trying to apologize. A bouquet of 12 is reserved for marriage proposals, and 36 is to profess true love and 101 roses signifies the craziest love of all.

5.Wearing your heart on your sleeve is tradition

In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names to see who their Valentine would be. They would wear the name pinned to their sleeve for one week so that everyone would know their supposed true feelings.

6.A common symbol of Valentine’s Day is Cupid

The Roman god of love. The son of Venus and Mars, he was originally depicted as a young man who would sharpen his arrows on a grindstone whetted with blood from an infant, though now he is commonly presented as a pudgy baby. This transformation occurred during the Victorian era when business owners wanted to promote Valentine’s Day as more suitable for women and children.

7.The chocolate box has been around for more than 140 years.

The first Valentine's Day box of chocolates was introduced by Richard Cadbury in 1868.

8.Tradition in U.S. and U.K.

Traditionally, young girls in the U.S. and the U.K. believed they could tell what type of man they would marry depending on the type of bird they saw first on Valentine’s Day. If they saw a blackbird, they would marry a clergyman, a robin redbreast indicated a sailor, and a goldfinch indicated a rich man. A sparrow meant they would marry a farmer, a bluebird indicated a happy man, and a crossbill meant an argumentative man. If they saw a dove, they would marry a good man, but seeing a woodpecker meant they would not marry at all.
